2011 marks the centenary of the 1911 chinese Revolution, and the Hong Kong Repertory Theater (HKRep) will present a revival of its award-winning production of “Boundless Movement (遍地芳菲)” in GuangZhou in July.
A collaboration of legendary dramatist Raymond To and HKRep’s Anthony Chan, this modern Chinese historical epic is based on revolutionary activities around Guangzhou, specifically the story of the 72 martyrs of Huanghuagang. The story reflects how Chinese people from different social strata were imbued with the revolutionary spirit amidst troubled times. “Boundless Movement” is a vivid portrait of Chinese core values of family, love, friendship and patriotism.
The play’s Chinese title means “fragrant grass everywhere.” Under Raymond To’s pen, grass symbolizes Chinese-style determination, steadfastness, and courage. How grass multiplies aptly mirrors how hope springs eternal under dire circumstances. “Boundless Movement” also features popular television and film actors Liu Kai Chi and Candice Yu along with members from the HKRep.
