The Guangdong Art Gallery was made foundation laying on Dec. 28, 1990, started on Mar. 18, 1991 and completed and opened on Nov. 28, 1997. This gallery is a formative art museum planned and constructed according to modern multi-functional objective and it is a nonprofit permanent national cultural institution open to the public.

This gallery bears the social responsibility and historic mission to collect, study and exhibit national art treasure, make quality education for the people, make cultural exchange with foreign countries, drive the development of modern art career, so it is provided with six main functions of collection, study, exhibition, education, exchange, and service.

The art gallery with a building area of more than 20,000 square meters is divided into twelve exhibit halls and outdoor sculpture exhibit areas and display or exhibit can be hold simultaneously or respectively. The indoor exhibit area is 8,000 square meters and the outdoor exhibit area is 5,000 square meters.

The permanently exhibited works mainly include the coastal artistic works created in the recent and modern times, the Guangdong artistic works created in the contemporary era and the artistic works created by oversea chinese. The displayed artistic works mainly include sculpture, painting and ceramic works. The art gallery also holds all kinds of special exhibitions, invitation exhibitions and applied exhibitions on every year.

Since the establishment, this gallery has already planned and held lots of successful large exhibitions. This art gallery also has a multi-functional scholarly communication hall with 300 seats and double sound channel simultaneous interpretation equipment and it can be used for international scholarly communication and the playing of movie and television.
