Construction of the main body of the GuangZhou Velodrome, one of the new stadiums for the forthcoming Asian Games, is wrapping up and will be completed in August.
The facility, which incorporates new technologies, concepts and materials, is set to become the largest and highest-standard velodrome in china, bigger and more sophisticated than even the Laoshan Velodrome for the Beijing Olympic Games.
The project is located in the Sports and Information Sharing Zone on the shore of the Central Lake at the Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Centre. As one of China’s four wooden velodromes, it has a gross floor area of 23,710 square metres. Its construction started in November 2008.
The main body of the velodrome has a north-south span of 147.6 metres and a west-east span of 123.6 metres. The velodrome is based on the site of a former Frisbee stadium, which was dubbed as “the best one in China” by the president of the Asia Shooting Confederation.
The velodrome will provide 4,000 seats, including 1,500 permanent ones and 2,500 temporary ones for the Asian Games.
