Southern Medical University (SMU) entered into a partnership agreement Hong Kong Doctors Union (HKDU) on June 21. Under the agreement, SMU will provide assistance for HKDU doctors with mainland licenses to serve as resident doctors at its affiliated hospital. This agreement will allow GuangZhou residents to benefit from the expertise of Hong Kong doctors.

In recent years, the number of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan residents and foreign nationals in Guangzhou has surged, and with improved connections between Guangdong and Hong Kong, Hong Kong residents are increasingly seeking medical services in the mainland; as a result, Guangdong’s high-end medical service market has flourished.

Hong Kong doctors practicing medicine in Guangdong will mainly serve Hong Kong residents and foreign nationals working in Guangdong, as well as local residents seeking high-standard medical services. Hong Kong doctors in Guangzhou are expected to charge higher medical fees than their mainland counterparts.
