Huangpu District, located at the east of GuangZhou City, adjacent to the Guangzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone, has an area of 90.95 square kilometers and a population of 192,700.
Huangpu District is the home for the largest port in southern china – Huangpu port (now known as Guangzhou port). As early as the Tang Dynasty, Huangpu has been a key port in China and the starting point of the “Maritime Silk Road”. Later it became an important commercial and naval port. Nowadays Huangpu is the gateway for international exchange between Southern China and foreign courtiers in economy, technology and culture. The land and water transportation of the District is very convenient. Starting from the Huangpu port ships can reach large coastal chinese cities and more than 100 countries and regions of the world; by river ships can travel to Dongjiang, Xijiang and Beijiang along The Pearl River. Railways and roads run through the district, connecting downtown Guangzhou with shenzhen and Kowloon.
With the advantages of the Huangpu port, the district becomes the most important industrial production base of Guangzhou city. There are national, provincial and municipal owned enterprises involving the petrochemical, shipbuilding, automobile, machinery, smelting, timber and electric sectors. During the past ten years, local enterprises developed rapidly. More than 300 kinds of products are produced by more than 200 categories of enterprises, including hardware, plastics, food and beverages and stone processing enterprises. Many of their products are sold to Europe, America, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Macao.
The District not only has beautiful hills and rivers, but also many relics and natural resorts. Its tourism resources are very unique. Famous tourist destinations include the Nanhai Temple– the starting point of the “Marine Silk Road”, Ba Si cemetery—the world’s oldest religious cemetery, the world renowned Huangpu Military Academy and the Changzhou tourist resort.
