When people think of the most popular entertainments currently favoured by GuangZhou’s youth, one would usually think of dark KTVs, online gaming in internet cafés, and basketball games. A new trend has emerged however, which sees the return of board games especially “Sanguosha” which is based on chinese history and the “Three Kingdom” period.

A competition was held on Sunday (July 18) at V-space Sports Mall which attracted numerous teams and spectators. Organised by a local social networking website www.foundz.com, the competition shall go through four rounds in July and August, before the top 32 teams compete in the final on September 4. Each team is made up of six players and the winners shall go home with a 10,000 yuan award.

“Sanguosha” is a board game created by locals in 2008. The game is enriched with Chinese history and traditional ethics. In just two years, the game’s popularity has grown so fast it is now the most played game in china, overtaking UNO and Monopoly. Today, there are at least 30 board game shops in Guangzhou.
