One of china’s most prosperous provinces, Guangdong celebrates its Culture Week from today through August 1, providing an insight into the diverse powerhouse region on the southern coast.
The week will feature large-scale folk singing and dancing shows, acrobatics, lion dances, Cantonese Opera, Chao Opera, fashion shows, folk arts and other cultural elements.
The provincial capital GuangZhou and economic hub shenzhen are economically among the important cities in China.
The province’s central region, which is also the political and economic centre, is populated predominantly by Cantonese speakers and famous for Cantonese cuisine.
Cantonese Opera is a form of chinese opera popular in Cantonese-speaking areas. Related dialects are spoken in most of the western part of the province. The Hakka people live in large areas of Guangdong, including Huizhou, Meizhou, Shenzhen, Heyuan and Shaoguan, among others.
Much of the eastern part of Guangdong is populated by the Hakka people, and the Hakka culture including Hakka cuisine, Han opera, Hakka Hanyue and sixian (traditional instrumental music) and Hakka folk songs.
